What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualised goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional (Registered Music Therapist) who has completed an approved music therapy program."
- As defined by the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA)

Basically, Music Therapy is the planned and creative use of music to attain and maintain health and well-being!

It is a research-based practice and an established health profession that incorporates a range of music making methods within and through a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, communicative and social needs of individuals. Music Therapy is utilised across a range of sectors, from health, age care, early childhood, disability, community, and private practice!

An important note: Music Therapy differs from musical entertainment or music education in that it uses music to achieve specific therapeutic outcomes.

What is a Registered Music Therapist?

A Registered Music Therapist (RMT) is a university-trained allied health professional who uses music intentionally to support a person’s physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. RMTs study music, psychology, physiology, and therapeutic techniques, and are registered through the Australian Music Therapy Association.

How can music therapy help you?

Music therapy aims to improve the health outcomes, experiences, and quality of life of individuals. From developing emotional regulation and calming strategies to strengthening relationships and social skills, and coping with trauma, change or life transitions, evidence shows music therapy improves mental health and wellbeing; speech, communication and social skills; body movement, coordination and physical function; memory, attention and cognitive function; and pain management.
